Skin: A History of Nudity in the Movies: Directed by Danny Wolf. With Warren Beatty, Martine Beswick, Linda Blair, Peter Bogdanovich. The definitive documentary on the history of nudity in feature films from the early silent days to the present, studying the changes in morality that led to the use of nudity in films while emphasizing the political, sociological and artistic changes that shaped that history. Skin will also study the gender inequality in presenting nude images in motion pictures and will follow the revolution that has created nude gender equality in feature films today. It culminates in a discussion of "what are nude scenes like in the age of the #METOO movement" as well as a look at CGI nudity that seems a large part of motion pictures' future. The documentary will compare the use of nudity to further storylines vs. simple exploitation and discuss how nudity is used in movies today with the explosion of must-see television and its influence on the film medium.

When it was first submitted to the British Board of Film Classification for approval, the film’s examiner concluded that while it was not exploitative as many films covering BDSM are, the explicit nature of many scenes was in excess of anything else they had ever approved, including an instance of a man graphically having his genitals nailed to a board. As such “Maitresse” was rejected. It was not until 1981, five years after its completion and after cutting nearly five minutes of footage that it was approved with an X rating. In 2003 it was submitted for approval again, and this time it was approved with an 18 rating, proving that some sensibilities do change over time.

That is precisely what happens to Theresa. Despite the affections she receives, Theresa is constantly insecure about her body, her age, and whether or not these men truly find her attractive. Her feelings are conveyed especially thanks to the atypical approach that Seidl takes with his filmmaking. He works with highly-structured scenes but without a traditional script, allowing the actors to work off of each other. This improvisational angle allows for some especially naturalistic scenes that would be much harder to produce using traditional methods.

Protagonist Adele is a teenage girl who is just reaching the point of her life where sex is becoming a reality for her. But while boys hold her attention for a moment, the blue-haired Emma is the one who really captures her attention. The two begin dating despite bullying from Adele’s school friends, and the film follows them as they grow and learn and change.

The titular Pierre is successful novelist living in a pseudo-incestuous relationship with his mother. He is also engaged to his cousin. So it perhaps comes as little surprise when a woman claiming to be his long-lost sister appears in his life and the two run off together in a whirlwind romance. The story continues to devolve into madness and depravity all around them as Pierre desperately seeks to complete his next novel, certain that it will be as much of a success as his first.

Similar to “Pola X,” “Y Tu Mama Tambien” also saw problems being released in a number of countries. This time it was for both graphic sexual content and explicit depictions of drug use. Set against the backdrop of political and economic upheaval of late 1990’s Mexico, the film is a coming of age road trip story. Julio and Tenoch are two teenage boys who have resolved to travel and live as bachelors during the summer that their girlfriends are away. Upon meeting Luisa, a woman in her late twenties, they attempt to impress her with talk of a fabricated beach they could bring her to.

Perhaps the most eye-opening thing about this documentary is just how prevalent nudity was in the early years of cinema. One such performer is Aubrey Munson who was the model for several famous statutes. The film INSPIRATION attempted to bring artistic nudes to the silver screen by examining Ms. Munson posing for an artist searching for the perfect model. At that time in history, as long as she wasn't moving, it was perfectly acceptable to reveal her unclothed figure. The acceptance of nudity did change as time went on, but even during the Golden Age of cinema, filmmakers would find ways to push the boundaries.

There's much to appreciate in how tactfully the film opens up discussion on the subject matter. Yet it did seem to spend far less time on movies made after the turn of the century. Surprisingly, the question of how things have and will change in regards to acceptance and popularity was surprisingly quick. Less surprising of course, sexual assault is covered, but it didn't dive too deep into how on-screen sexuality is currently handled and how things are likely to change drastically. Considering the film runs over two hours, I would've expected more ground covered when it comes to modern films. That said, there's certainly enough here to give you a foundation on how nudity in features isn't going away anytime soon.

SKIN: A HISTORY OF NUDITY IN MOVIES is an enjoyable documentary that examines its provocative subject matter informatively. It was rather surprising that some titles were skimmed over, especially something like PORKY'S, but they cover a whole lot of ground. And remember that question? The one about which nude scene was the first you'd ever witnessed? This documentary will likely, at the very least, touch on it. A whole generation and then some will remember when
