An attempt was made to list as many of the notable, great, or at least very good books written in the last century. The books have to be notable in some way or another, such as winning a best books of the year award or any major literary award. For major authors, an attempt was made to go through their entire canon to see which of their books were quite good. Merely fair, mediocre, or lesser works were not included. Before 1900, works that still withstand the test of time as notable. great or excellent. As we go back in time, fewer books continue to make the list, so the modern era will include many more works, many of which no doubt will not withstand the test of time. Many subject areas were included, but there was an emphasis on literature. Only works in English translation were listed. Very long – 1,060 pages!
