A Facebook spokesperson acknowledged that “while OnlyFans isn’t a porn website, we know it can be used in that way, so we take action on accounts that share OnlyFans links when paired with other sexually suggestive content.”
For those of you unfamiliar, OnlyFans is a subscription-based website on which people can pay a monthly fee to receive adult content directly from their favorite content producers, ranging from photos to videos to online chats. The website launched in 2016 and wasn't built specifically to share NSFW content, but because it has very few restrictions on what can be posted, it became known for a large amount of adult content, including porn, content creators were producing. And since it is an easy way to make money from home, the amount of creators (and subscribers) has skyrocketed during the pandemic. Celebrities saw an opportunity, and are joining the platform in droves.
While the public conversation around the site has centred on the idea that it will normalise and destigmatise those who create porn and “cam-girl” content, Dr Lauren Rosewarne, from the University of Melbourne, isn’t so sure OnlyFans will cause society to drastically change its views on sex work.
After learning of the packet, the Jacksons say they wrote a letter to the superintendent explaining the situation and offered to show the OnlyFans page to prove that Crystal's content was not pornographic, but never received a response.
At first, then, it seems like it may be a simple story of greedy capitalists killing the goose that’s laying their golden eggs. If investors are uncomfortable partnering with a company that provides access to porn, simply ditch the sex workers that actually made the company what it is. But OnlyFans’ statement added another potential reason for the shift: “These changes are to comply with the requests of our banking partners and payout providers.”
In summary: Thursday’s announcement makes OnlyFans as a company less likely to survive, exposes the people who made it successful to hardship and exploitation, and does nothing to actually crack down on the exploitation of minors or any of the other excuses anti-porn crusaders deploy as cover.
OnlyFans has allowed me to take a step back from working with studios or spending all my time on a live-streaming platform. I’m not tied to companies that expect a certain type of performance on set. With trans porn in particular, you’re almost always expected to engage in hardcore penetration. OnlyFans allows me to do more varied content, like solo work or just chatting with fans who are sending me DMs. It makes up about a fourth of my income at this point, roughly $2,500 a month.
I started using OnlyFans in the summer of 2019, while I was working as a security guard in Santa Monica. I had never done sex work or porn before, but one day I promoted a nude shot on Twitter, and my followers blew up. A few months later I was making way more than my security job, so I quit. That decision changed my life.
Subscription plan: Sami is charging $19.99 per month and only has one post so far. Many creators use OnlyFans to post pornographic material, though celebrities and influencers also use it for SFW material
